Concept of Normalcy

What can resource parents and other caregivers do to promote normalcy?
caregivers should become familiar with the laws and policies related to normalcy. Caregivers can promote normalcy for youth by encouraging youth to participate in activities and employing positive discipline practices. Engaging the youth and working with the youth’s social worker and other system stakeholders to understand and support the youth’s needs and interests are also important in promoting normalcy.

What can foster youth do to access activities?
Foster youth should and talk with their resource parent about the activities they would are interested in participating. They should also learn about their rights and resources for information, like the state Foster Care Ombudsman’s Office8. If an issue cannot be resolved by talking with the resource parent, the youth can talk to his or her social worker or attorney.
