AN INTENSE, IRRATIONAL FEAR.
Homophobia is an intense, irrational fear, disgust, or hatred of intimate same sex
relationships that becomes overwhelmingly to the person. This irrational fear
effects the way an individual treats individuals who provoke the fear.
Homophobia results in fear of knowing, befriending, or associating with gays,
lesbians, or bisexuals; fear of being perceived as gay, lesbian or bisexual; and the
fear of stepping outside of accepted gender role behavior.
The role of homophobia is securing conformity with gender role expectations
underscores the relationship between gender, sexism, and heterosexism.
